, News

Today, we had the privilege of sharing the UDIA Awards for Excellence Awards ceremony, in-person, with the best of Victoria’s urban development industry.

Together we awarded exemplary work, re-connected with colleagues and peers, and gave ourselves a well-deserved pat on the back for all the industry has achieved during crisis, challenge and change.

Thank you to everyone who was part of this very special day, and congratulations to our amazing winners and finalists.

We are honoured to present the 2020 UDIA Victoria Awards for Excellence winners.

Affordable Development Award

Napier St Social Housing Redevelopment by Unison Housing

Unison transformed a run down block of 17 small units into 54 brand new self-contained apartments to be let as social housing to people who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness.

The development was designed with a focus on residents’ well-being and quality of life, with great natural light and airflow, a large communal area and outdoor garden, high-standard energy efficiency, accessible facilities, and enhanced safety measures.

Design Excellence Award

Seafarers by Riverlee

Transforming a forgotten island of city land into a riverside precinct of quality and character, Seafarers presents a new era in luxury residential living for Melbourne.

Situated on a 220-metre expanse of uninterrupted riverfront, the Seafarers design centres on the restoration of the heritage-listed Goods Shed No. 5 and its distinctive travelling crane. It seamlessly connects Melbourne’s first eco-luxury hotel and international hotel-branded residences with Seafarers Rest, a 3,500-square metre landscaped haven.

Environmental Excellence Award

The Point by Moremac Property Group

Leaving a place in a better state than it was when you arrived, overcoming challenges, determination and resilience, a stunning natural environment. This is The Point.

When Moremac Property Group acquired The Point in 2013 from Stockland, after their 10-year effort to gain project approval, it not only came with controversy surrounding the development, but massive environmental, engineering, political and community challenges.

Moremac have tackled some of the most complex water management systems that the judges have ever seen in Victoria and have created a community of high-quality, coastal-inspired homes set within an environment sensitive to its abundant natural assets, landscapes, and parks.

High Density Development Award

The Eastbourne by Mirvac

A timeless residential icon and significant addition to East Melbourne’s rich architectural fabric, the 14-level Eastbourne development honours  the  tradition  of  Freemasonry,  which  maintains  a  prominent presence  on  the  site  with  a  purpose-built Grand  Lodge on  the  corner  of  Victoria  Parade  and  Eades Street, and located directly opposite the Fitzroy Gardens.

The building’s design approach was inspired by the notion of pavilions in the park, with the aspiration to create a residential environment which directly connects with the gardens and provides a calm and serene outlook.

Leaders in Diversity Award

Leveraging our Diversity to Create a Better Victoria by Development Victoria

Development Victoria put people at the core of what they do, and diversity and inclusion is key to achieving their goals. Their culture is built on diversity, honesty and accountability. Collaboration, innovation and delivery are the core values that underpin their work and in striving for excellence, employees are encouraged to prioritise their continued development in line with these values.

While facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the health and wellbeing of their people was paramount. Underpinned by existing policies, employees have been encouraged and supported to access flexible working hours and a range of leave provisions to manage the competing needs of work and family and Development Victoria are proud of what they have achieved.

Marketing Excellence Award

The Eastbourne by Mirvac

The Eastbourne is an extraordinary residential address that has created a new legacy for Melbourne. An “inner-city Eden”, it is a reimagining of one of the city’s most iconic locations, positioned on the historic site of the former Dallas Brooks Hall, steeped in Melbourne cultural history

The sold-out luxury development at is the result of a powerhouse collaboration between Mirvac and Bates Smart, that originally delivered the multi-award-winning landmark, The Melburnian.

Masterplanned Development Award

Aston by Peet Limited

Aston is a 2000-lot masterplanned community in the heart of Craigieburn. Aston is a growing, vibrant community offering a diverse range of housing choices for its residents, ranging from compact townhouses and apartments, to large double-storey homes and expansive park-front allotments.

The community features four outstanding parks and playgrounds, the nine-hectare Aston Fields sporting precinct, secondary school, childcare centre, and a future shopping village. These amenities are connected by a twelve km network of walking trails and bike paths along Aston’s beautiful waterway, linking numerous parks, playgrounds, boardwalks and viewing platforms.

Medium Density Development Award

Napier Street by Freadman White for Milieu by Milieu

The diversity of dwelling typologies at 223 Napier Street creatively addresses aspirations for higher-density living while delivering strong community outcomes. The thoughtful planning strategy, combining a number of dwelling typologies, fosters a wider spread of socio-economic profiles, illustrating the strength of diversity in creating thriving social communities.

The architectural ‘big move’ of designing the building in two halves addresses the
constraint of the site’s north and south boundaries, allowing light, air and sound to
penetrate the core of the building. The integration of these essential elements is a principal outcome of the project; simultaneously enhancing sustainable, experiential and community outcomes.

Residential Development Award

Waterford Rise by Baw Baw Developments

Waterford Rise is a 1,365 lot master planned subdivision in the regional Victorian town of Warragul, approx. 105 km east of the Melbourne CBD and in one of Victoria’s designated Regional Growth areas.

The development of Waterford Rise has been driven by a group of passionate, local Warragul people with a strong community focus whose overriding consideration is to achieve a quality outcome and that is clearly apparent from the look and feel being achieved in the Estate and its overwhelming acceptance by the public.

Small Scale Development Award

Howard West  by C Street Projects

Howard West has brought together a diverse community through a clever, considered design. The building contains its seventeen residences behind the ornate brick façade that harks back to an industrial past. Although the streetscape hasn’t changed for almost a century, Howard West has left a new indelible mark.

The development incorporated original heritage features that had been concealed under layers of paint and alterations. Indoor living spaces were required to be well-lit, spacious and comfortable – a considerable challenge given the enclosed block. There was no compromise on amenity, with a generous amount of private open space for residents. Environmental rating requirements were exceeded.

Special Purpose Living Award

Lifestyle Ocean Grove  by Lifestyle Communities

Lifestyle Ocean Grove is purpose-built to enable seniors to live an independent life of luxury at a truly affordable price. The development fills a much-needed gap in the Bellarine Peninsula for high quality custom-designed homes for retirees.

With 5-star luxury resort-style facilities and leading wellness and activities in a secure and sustainable environment, Lifestyle Ocean Grove offers an active lifestyle in a welcoming community of like-minded people. The low maintenance homes priced at 65% of the local median house price, Lifestyle Ocean Grove enables homeowners to release home equity and downsize to a bigger life within a vibrant, connected community.

Urban Renewal Award

80 Collins Street by Dexus and Dexus Wholesale Property Fund

80 Collins Street is a world-class, once-in-a-generation, mixed-use urban precinct development and Melbourne CBD’s first premium-grade office tower in two decades.

One of the largest, most integrated precincts developed in Victoria in recent years, 80 Collins delivers a number of Melbourne and Australian development firsts including the complex cantilevered solution. This landmark development has transformed this prominent corner site achieving exceptional amenity and richly layered connectivity.

Judges’ Award Metropolitan Melbourne

Napier St Social Housing Redevelopment by Unison Housing

The Napier Street Housing Development is a carefully managed redevelopment of a run-down block of 17 small units into 54 brand new self-contained social housing apartments.

While the judges were deeply impressed by the manner in which Unison operate; providing services to people without other options, and not cherry-picking residents; it was the quality of what was produced and the efficiency of the project that made it stand above most other developments.

Unison Housing were able to finish the project on an extremely tight budget and ahead of schedule. They have achieved a well-designed and attractive development with a focus on residents’ wellbeing and quality of life, with great natural light and airflow, a large communal area and outdoor garden, high standard energy efficiency, accessible facilities, and enhanced safety measures.

Judges’ Award Regional Victoria

The Point by Moremac Property Group

The development of the Point, at Point Lonsdale, required Moremac to overcome extraordinary challenges, that had dogged the site for twenty years.

The controversy surrounding the development was only part of the issue. The development is based around a unique water body engineered to allow a regular flushing of seawater using a system of computerised gates to manage water ingress and egress. The system required a high level of engineering innovation and this has been followed by an excellent residential development creating a new coastal community on the popular Bellarine.

UDIA Victoria & Simonds Young Professional of the Year Award

Nick Clements, Tract Consultants

Nick has established both Tract and himself as a leader in Geelong’s planning and development space, and has been instrumental in building the profile and professionalism of the development industry within the Geelong region.

Through his work and advocacy in the planning and redevelopment of golf courses throughout Victoria — including through the recent Golf Course Redevelopment Standing Advisory Committee, he has played a key role in elevating this as a State government issue and providing greater certainty for the development industry in this space.

Nick is a passionate, pragmatic town planner who understands the important role that planning plays in the property industry, and vice versa. He tirelessly works to achieve good planning outcomes whilst still reflecting commercial realities, through his day-to-day work on individual development projects as well as at a broader policy level through his advocacy work on the UDIA Victoria’s Geelong Region Committee.

UDIA Victoria & Jinding Developments Women in Leadership Award

Alicia Davidge, Lendlease

Since Alicia commenced as a graduate in our industry, she has always advocated for gender equality. Alicia found it tough when she first started in the development industry as it was very male dominated. She was often the only female in the room and had to work hard to prove herself and earn the respect of others. Alicia commented that when she looks back over her career journey and to where she is today, she could have easily given up in those early days but continued to persevere as she knew that our industry needed it.

Today Alicia feels so proud that she has been part of paving the way for another generation of women to succeed in our industry. She loves managing teams and takes great pride in providing an environment where her team members can grow, develop and be successful in creating their footprint on our industry.
