Apartments (Mid-Rise) Award | 15 Thompson Street by Assemble

7 Mar 2025

Situated in a designated urban renewal precinct, 15 Thompson Street by Assemble is an innovative apartment building in the emerging community of Kensington. It is a modern eight storey, gas-free and operationally carbon neutral building, offering affordable studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments through a build-to-rent-to-own scheme.

The entire design and social infrastructure fosters community connection. The vision was to create accessible, comfortable housing with low running costs and minimal environmental impact in a modern, community-centric precinct.

The ground floor includes an internal park, two bookable rooms, a workshop, a lending library, and a guest house for residents to book when they are expecting extra company. The shared rooftop has a sports court, outdoor dining area with kitchen, pizza oven and dining table, herb gardens, a chicken coop, dog run with washing bays, a children’s play area with outdoor seating, and a communal laundry.

The emphasis on affordable quality, innovation, design and detail has produced an outstanding development providing a different offer to most in Melbourne, with plans to deliver this concept nationally.

This project reinforces Assemble’s commitment to create healthier, socially connected and financially sustainable lives for more Australians facing barriers to home ownership.
